Evelyn Morgan is one year old

Dear Evelyn Morgan,

Evelyn Morgan is one year old

My little one, my baby girl, my princess, my sweetheart. How is it that you are already a year old? It was just barely Christmas and I blinked and now it is Christmas again. How have you grown up so fast? I swear, you turned a year old faster than your brother did. Although I am so happy you are growing up, part of me wants you to stay my baby girl forever.

One look at your sweet smile, and I melt. You are so precious to. I admit, I wasn’t the best mother the first few months of your life. I suffered pretty deep postpartum depression and anxiety. To be honest, I hardly remember from Christmas until Easter. But, whenever I look at you know, I feel nothing but love–pure, unadulterated love.

You are already emerging into a wonderful girl. You love to cuddle, which is the exact opposite of how your brother was at this age. I relish anytime you give me a hug and lay your head on my shoulder. That is a little piece of heaven for me. You are very social, just like your Daddy, with a smile always on your face. I can tell you are already getting stubborn just like your Mama and I fear for us come your teenage years.

Evelyn, you mean so much to me. I feel our family is complete with you. You fit in so well, but you definitely round out our family. We are whole because of you.

Love, Mama.

Eating | You have 3-4 bottles of 6 ounces of formula. But, now, we get to switch you to whole milk! Yaay! No more buying expensive formula! Rejoice! You are still a picky, picky eater and somewhat of a grazer. But, you are more and more aware of when you are hungry or thirsty, and we are beginning to catch onto those cues as well.

Sleeping | You sleep through the night about 75% of the time. Otherwise, you’ll wake up between 3-6 am. We will give you a bottle to have in your crib and expect you to fall back asleep until at least 6 am. Unlike your brother, who had to be rocked to sleep completely for naps, if you don’t fall asleep in the rocking chair, you do pretty well on your own. If I give you a pacy, a doll, a blanket, turn on the music machine and tell you to go to sleep, you do within a few minutes. Sometimes you take forever to go to sleep for nap time, instead, preferring to play quietly in your crib. But, you are content. You still take two naps about an hour or two each. However, lately, your morning nap schedule is getting rearranged because Rhys’s 25 minute speech therapy sessions are a half hour at the beginning of your nap time. And, now that we are on vacation, your sleep sucks.

Milestones | Movement: You are still running. You love to climb up stairs, but you have absolutely no idea how to get down. You love to climb on everything. You have also started to bounce up and down to dance or show your excitement.

Communication:  Just recently, you have started a screech/grunt to show your disapproval or disgust. You are learning you have a say and you don’t have to like or enjoy everything. You can say “Mama” and “mamee” (Lamby–your favorite doll). Daddy is still trying to get you to say “daddy” but without success. I’m trying to get you to say “uh oh”, but no tries. You wave goodbye, hi, and night-night. You understand when and why to clap.

Playing: You want to do whatever Rhys is doing and play with whatever he is playing. You love it when he pushes or pulls you around in a box or blanket. Chase is a new favorite game and you understand when to be chased and when to chase us. You love taking things out of containers and putting them back in. Blocks and stacking rings are another favorite of yours.

Personality | You are really beginning to be a Mama’s girl. You love Daddy, but sometimes, you just want Mama. If I even head toward the door, or leave a room, you start to fuss. But, besides separation anxiety, your stubbornness is starting to become apparent. You are still our happy, smiley girl, but you are becoming more aware of your other emotions as well.

Evelyn is eleven months old!

Dear Evelyn Morgan,

Evelyn is eleven months old!

You are growing up so fast. I can’t believe that you are almost a year old! Nothing really has happened in November. We did have Thanksgiving dinner with the sister missionaries. But, you only took a few bites of Daddy’s yams, then you were done. You are also starting to get some separation anxiety.  But, you are still very social. Continue Reading

Evelyn's 10 month update: sleeping, communication, mobility, likes, dislikes, and more!

Dear Evelyn Morgan,

Evelyn's 10 month update: sleeping, communication, mobility, likes, dislikes, and more!

Oh boy. Poor Evelyn. Poor second child. Another monthly update that is a week two weeks late! I haven’t really been blogging at all last month, and of course this gets pushed to the back as well. Even the pictures aren’t the best. I actually used your Halloween costume for this month’s pictures. You were a snow leopard for Halloween. It’s been cold, windy, and cloudy a lot recently and I just never had the time for dress you up and take pictures outside. But, boy what a month this has been Evelyn! One major up and one major down. You are walking!!!! And, Grandma and Grandpa came for a quick visit. You loved all the attention they poured on you all weekend long. But, you’ve also had a major teething session and currently have a double ear infection and bronchitis! You are actually on a nebulizer right now.

When you took the first bit of steam from it at the pediatrician’s office, you did not like it at all. It was a big oxygen mask on your face and I had to pin your arms down. You fought the whole time. Rhys got very upset, to the point of crying for fear. He was scared of the “bad guy medicine” on his baby sister. He only calmed down once he saw that you were safe and out of the nebulizer. Your brother loves you so much. I hope you know that, even when he pushes you and takes away your toys. You are the apple of his eye. Continue Reading

Evelyn | Nine Months

Evelyn is now nine months old. She can stand on her own, tries walking, sleeps through the night, and loves to wrestle.

Dear Evelyn Morgan,

Evelyn is now nine months old. She can stand on her own, tries walking, sleeps through the night, and loves to wrestle.

This month went by so fast! I swear, just last week, I did your 8 month update. A lot has happened for you this past month! Two major milestones hit and a major emergency! We actually had to take you to the emergency room after calling Poison Control. Our bathroom doesn’t have a medicine cabinet and I stupidly kept our medication under the sink. You learned how to open the door while I was in the shower. Unbeknownst to me, you started playing with the Ibuprofen. Apparently I didn’t tighten the lid on it. When I got out of the shower, there were a few pills around you and some white around your mouth. So, I called poison control. They said to take you to the ER. Justin came home from work to watch Rhys. They put you under observation for a few hours, then took your blood. The blood test showed no medication in your blood streams, so we guessed you didn’t actually swallow a pill, just spit up. We went home. Then a few hours later when daddy changed your diaper, there was a pill there…after we had changed it a few times before!!! MIRACLE!

Height | 28 inches (64th percentile)

Eat | You drink 4 bottles of 6-8 ounces. You continually tank it all. Typically you have a bottle right when you wake up, then when you go down for both naps and for bed. You have three meals and some snacks. You still love goldfish, cheerios, and yogurt bites. You also really love eating whatever we are eating rather than your own food. You are starting to dislike baby food and will only eat maybe half a serving before refusing bites. I can tell you are going to be a stubborn and picky eater.

Sleep | Daytime: You still have two naps, typically at 9 and 2. You sleep anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours. Sometimes it takes a while for you to go to sleep but typically, you do well now. Finally.

Nighttime: We put you down at 7 with a full bottle. Every now and then, you will wake up before Rhys falls asleep or before we go to bed. We’ll let you cry for a bit to see if you can settle yourself back down. Typically, you do. For the most part, you are sleeping through the night now. However, sometimes you will wake up at 5 am and be up for the day. We don’t appreciate that. Sigh. We’ll work on it.

Evelyn is now nine months old. She can stand on her own, tries walking, sleeps through the night, and loves to wrestle.

Milestones | Movement: You are definitely cruising along furniture, sometimes even with one hand. Sometimes you will even move between pieces of furniture. Now you can stand up well. You love to stand up, but close to furniture. You have even taken a few steps! Holy cow! You just barely turned 9 months old last week, and are already trying to walk! I can’t believe it! You will be full-on walking by yourself by Halloween!

Communication: You have started to say “mama”…or a variation of it. You still haven’t caught on how to sign “more”, but you get excited when I sign it. You have learned how to be frustrated and you are very apparent with it. you will growl loudly and arch your back. It’s really cute, actually.

Playing: You love playing with the kitchen set, Mr. Potato Head, the toy car play area, and Rhys’s Legos. But, he doesn’t appreciate it when you mess up his Lego games…You love rolling balls around and chasing them. You also love to wrestle with Rhys and Mama.

Personality | You are definitely becoming a lot more active and curious. You still like to sit and watch, but you are more willing to go places and do something now. You are such a social girl and everyone loves you. We had lunch at Costco the other day and every one stopped to coo and aww at you. But, your independence and stubbornness is becoming more apparent.

Evelyn, every day, I love you more and more. I can tell we will butt heads quite a bit, just as I did with my mom. But, I also know that we will be super close. Never stop cuddling me. Never stop giving everyone a big slobbery kiss and giant bear hug.

Love Mama and Daddy

Evelyn | Eight Months

Dear Evelyn Morgan,

Evelyn is now 8 months old. She is cruising, shadowing her big brother, teething terribly, and is still the happiest girl alive (when we're not trying to put her down for bed).

It’s finally happened–second child mommy syndrome. I’m getting this post out a week after you turned 8 months. But, we’ve been in the middle of a lot of transitions this week. You are hard-core teething, we moved, and both you and Rhys have suffered some sleep regression because of that change. But, things are finally getting settled and back into a routine now.

You still have major separation anxiety. Rhys is still your whole world. And everyone still absolutely adores you and always comments in public on how cute you are. I have to agree with them. Continue Reading
