Did you know you don’t have to own Adobe Photoshop to have great quality pictures for your blog or Instagram? It’s true! All my photos are taken myself and edited with BeFunky. I’ve even used BeFunky to make my pinnable images! You can have top quality edited photos WITHOUT using #adobe programs with @befunky! Click To Tweet
BeFunky allows me to edit my photos professionally without having to break the bank with Adobe programs or hiring someone to do it for me.
Why I use BeFunky to edit photos
Adobe programs are expensive, and many bloggers are looking for cheaper solutions, such as PicMonkey or Canva. You can use either for free, but for their premium usage, they require a yearly subscription. The same is true for BeFunky, and I prefer it the most.
When I first started blogging, I used PicMonkey…that’s what everyone was using. But, I didn’t really like it. I felt kind of limited without having the premium. Even still, it’s a bit limited…many of my unique fonts won’t translate properly onto PicMonkey. Also, the icons and images look a bit cartoonish.
I was told to use Canva. However, you can’t upload your own fonts unless you get the premium. And, many of the items you can add on cost extra!
Somehow, I found BeFunky and I fell in love with its editing. It reminded me a bit of the Adobe programs I used in high school, and I found it easy to use and I am amazed at its possibilities. (For full disclosure, I do have a premium account.)
- blank templates for social media images (and printables and 5×7 cards)
- ability to save to BeFunky to edit later
- create clear backgrounds for vectors
- basic photo editing options
- touch up options for portraits
- artistic effects
- a wide range of graphics and frames to choose from (as well as the ability to upload your own)
- a variety of overlay options and textures
- large list of fonts to use (and ability to use any of your own fonts–with the free version!!)
- use of their app with quick, simple editing tools
And, most of these features were available before PicMonkey added them!
How to edit photos with BeFunky
BeFunky is really easy to use and I typically only use the few same editing tools with all my photos.
Step 1: Upload your photo
Step 2: Increase brightness
Step 3: Contrast colors and light/darkness
Step 4: Increase highlights
Step 5: Sharpen the picture
Look at how Evelyn’s eyes pop now!
Another feature that I typically use is the temperature. Sometimes, if I take pictures inside or in the shade, they have too much of a bluish tint. So, I “warm” the picture up.
Introducing New Enhance DLX Effects
BeFunky has just released some really new photo enhancer effects! You do need a Plus account ($4.95/month or $2.91/month if you sign up for an annual account), but regardless of if you have a free account or a Plus account, you can still preview the effects on your pictures.
Ther are four new Enhance DLX effects: HDR DLX, Sharpen DLX, Vibrant Colors DLX, and Denoise DLX. And, I will tell you, they are top quality! And so simple to use! Each tool fixes your image automatically, but you have the option of using the slide bar for the strength of the effect. You can even click on “settings” and manually change the effects to your preference.
According to BeFunky’s blog,
This effect is super powerful on low-lit photos or any time you’ve taken a photo with significantly lighter and darker elements, like when sun is behind an object and darkens the foreground. Ordinarily, most photo editing effects work to transform the entire image as a whole, regardless of the distribution of pixels – but our HDR DLX effect is way more clever! The effect separates your photo into grid-like regions that are invisible to the naked eye, knowing exactly where to apply the most power based on the light and dark pixels of each region. The result is truly balanced contrast, added sharpness, and a sense of depth that couldn’t be achieved with other effects that treat all regions the same.
Here is a photo I used the HDR DLX on.
This is a nice picture of the LDS Dallas Temple. I was so in love with the color of the stone of the temple, especially in contrast to the bright blue Texan sky. But, this picture, even though it’s taken with my DSLR, doesn’t do it justice. So, I used the HDR DLX….
Now both the temple and the sky stand out even more.
A lot of times, your pictures come out nice, and the colors are great, but it seems too “smooth.” You want your subjects to be sharp and crisp.
This plant really stands out now and looks super crisp and fresh…which is perfect since it is a type of cabbage!
Vibrant Colors DLX
Sometimes there are bright colors that deserve to stand out. What an eye-popping picture it’ll be then. Take this photo of my 4 month old daughter’s clothes and hair.
Look at that red hair! And that blue dress! Not only did it enhance the colors of the two things that mattered most to me, but it even enhanced the color of the blanket and the grass. I love it!
According to BeFunky’s blog:
Noise is a commonly-used term in photography to describe the visual distortion that occurs when you take a photo and it comes out grainy or has splotches of discoloration. It usually happens when you take a photo in low-light or shoot uniform color, like a blue sky. Since cameras don’t see color like we do, you’ll notice noise as those little red, blue, or green dots that appear like television fuzz and ruin your photo. But alas, our new Denoise DLX will reverse the noise and save your photo!
Now this one is a bit tougher to see, but professional photographers (which I am not), will be able to tell. It kind of basically helps smooth areas that look a bit pixilated. So, focus on the bottom third of this picture…the snow on the ice looks a bit pixilated….
Now it looks a bit more smooth and uniform.
