A Day in the Life

Since I now work a little as a Virtual Assistant and free lancer, Rhys is a full-fledged toddler, Justin has a new job and new hours, and we live in a completely different state, I thought I would share a new day-in-the-life post. The last time I did a daily schedule post, Rhys was little older than a year. Needless to say, our routines have changed quite a bit.

6:00 AM Justin gets up to get ready for work. It wakes me up, but I typically try to fall back asleep.

7:00 AM Justin leaves for work. DFW traffic is horrid, so even though it should be a 20 minute commute, it’s about a 50 minute commute for him! Yikes! I try to get up at this time to do scripture reading, but most of the time, I don’t.

7:30 AM Rhys will typically wake up around this time. He really wakes up anywhere between 6:50-7:30. There are a few days he’ll sleep in till 8 or past. I get him a cup of warm milk and pull him into my bed. He’ll watch Disney Junior while I read my scriptures and check social media.

8:00 AM Breakfast time. After breakfast, we clean up, do chores, and get dressed and ready for the day.

9:30 AM Play time for Rhys, “work time” for me. Rhys will play with his toys, read his books, or color while I do blogging stuff or free lance stuff. Since it is no longer an oven outside, sometimes we’ll go out and play in the common area (it’s still in the high 80s or low 90s!). If we have the car for the day, we’ll leave around 10 AM to go play either at the library or the mall or go run errands. I try to get as much work done as possible in the morning since I concentrate better and am more motivated than in the afternoon, but I play with Rhys during this time as well. I really follow his lead for attention.

12:00 PM Lunch time. We both eat lunch on table trays on the couch while watching Nick Jr for Rhys’s two favorite shows: Blaze and the Monster Machines and PAW Patrol. This helps to calm him down and get him ready for lunch/nap.(He get about an hour and half of TV and I am totally ok with that because they are all learning shows and he is actually already interacting with them!).

12:30 PM We move to my bed–it is the coolest room in the house and the comfiest spot for napping. Rhys watches Nick Jr. until he falls asleep, typically by 1:15. While he sleeps, I turn off the TV and do more internet surfing, read books, or I nap myself. I typically nap.

2:30-3:00 PM Rhys wakes up. He has a hard time waking up from his naps and typically is a little grumpy for about a half hour or so. Once he calms down, we put on our shoes, and go get the mail. We also walk around the apartment complex and play with the Tic Tac Toe game in the Office (Rhys loves going in the Office).

3:45 PM Rhys is offered a snack. Sometimes he’ll take, sometimes he won’t. I try to be very present during this time and play with him in the afternoon.

5:00 PM We start making dinner.

5:30-5:45 PM Justin gets home and we have dinner. After dinner, we clean up. Sometimes it’s bath night. Otherwise, it’s more play time, especially with Daddy. Rhys loves to hide with Justin and make me come find them.

7:00 PM Justin and I turn on our shows (like MasterChef or America’s Got Talent). Rhys will sometimes watch with us or play in his room.

7:30 PM We clean Rhys’s room, with his help. Then, he gets a warm cup of milk and a small bedtime snack.

8:00 PM Bed time for Rhys: load him up with pacies and stuffed animals, turn on his night light and music machine, sing three songs, say prayers with him, promise to check on him in five minutes if he doesn’t cry or scream, then close the door. Justin and I will watch TV, play games, or read for the rest of the night. Sometimes we also have couple counsel and talk about to-do lists, plans for the week, and finances.

10:30 PM Bed time for us.

So, that’s a typical day for the Morrell family. It’s pretty much the same just about every day. What’s your day like?

sounds like a great day routine!:) reading about nap time makes me already tired for a nap. haha

    • Nap time is great! I took a lot of naps on BYU campus! haha!

Our days are pretty structured, and most days it’s the same thing.
It’s still really hot here too, so we try and utilize our HOA pool in the afternoons. So many of our parks don’t have adequate shade.

    • It’s ridiculous how hot it still is!!!

  • A day in the life are always my favorite types of post. Yet I suck so much and doing tham. Your day sounds similar to ours. Where the heck is our Fall weather? I’m down for taking naps when Mason does which is a rare occurrence these days.

    • Are you in Texas too? Where?

      • Oh no we’re still in Florida. I feel like everywhere is having a warmer than usual Fall.

  • Sounds like you guys really have a nice, comfy routine going! It’s nice when kids know what to expect. Here, somehow, we started taking the kids swimming every Thursday, just because it fits into the schedule most conveniently. But the kids are smart, man, now, every Thursday, they tell us, “We’re going swimming because it’s Thursday!” I don’t want to see the revolt that will happen if there’s ever a Thursday when we can’t go swimming…

    • Thanks! Sometimes it gets a bit monotonous, and that’s why I really love the days I get the car!
