#LoveBlog2017 Day 1 | Valentine’s Day

You don't have to spend money on your spouse to enjoy Valentine's Day. Here are some easy ways to get the most out of the Day of Love with your significant other without spending money!

I’m super excited to help cohost #LoveBlog with Belle Brita again this year! This is a daily linkup during the month of February, talking about anything and everything having to do with love. Each day has it’s own topic and anyone is welcome to join! Today’s topic is on Valentine’s Day!

I am one of the lucky girl when it comes to Valentine’s Day. My birthday is on February 10, so birthday surprises and V-day surprises come nearly back to back. Justin really spoils me: I get a gift for my birthday (and chocolate), a special dinner and/or date in between, then a gift and chocolate for Valentine’s Day. He calls it Valentine’s Week. And poor Justin…he did such a great job our first year of marriage that he feels he has to live up to that every year!

This year, it’s going to be a little more casual (I hope), since we paid for plane tickets for me and the kids to be in Utah right now. I think the best Valentine’s Day gift I gave Justin were some bacon roses. He absolutely loved them!

But, since I’m not that comfortable about leaving both my toddler and my one month old with a babysitter just yet, I think we’ll forgo the dinner date this year (although Justin is more than welcome to make a special dinner!). So, I thought I’d share some inexpensive ways you could share Valentine’s Day together at home.

You don't have to spend money on your spouse to enjoy Valentine's Day. Here are some easy ways to get the most out of the Day of Love with your significant other without spending money!

10 Ways to Celebrate V-Day At Home

(Without spending money)

  • Make dinner together
  • Bake each others’ favorite desserts
  • If V-Day is on a weekend, make breakfast in bed for your spouse
  • After the kids go to bed, cuddle (and more!! *wink wink*)
  • Watch a favorite movie (for us, it would not be a lovey dovey romantic or rom-com…Justin disdains those)
  • Give each other acts of service–clean the house, let him/her take a nap, give a back/foot massage
  • Play a board or card game together
  • Talk out on the porch, enjoying the evening together
  • Build a fire, light some candles, and enjoy each others’ presence.
  • Help your kids to create handmade Valentine’s for their parents.

  1. Pearson’s birthday is on February 17th so he has a similar experience. A couple years ago we went on a romantic weekend getaway between the two days. We’ve never been big on going to a romantic restaurant on Valentine’s Day. Or making a big deal about it at all. I don’t like crowds and the pain of getting a reservation. I’d rather make it special at home.

    1. I would love to have a romantic giveaway….maybe we can do that in August for our 5th anniversary (I’d have a 3 year old and a 9 month old by then!)

  2. Before I comment on the actual content, I really love your choice of fonts and how you formatted this post. These are little things I notice.

    Moving on!

Bacon roses are AWESOME! You are the best wife ever! Do you want to be my wife for a day so I can get bacon roses? I really love bacon. And flowers. Both, a lot.

Dan and I are definitely at-home date night kind of people. We’re usually pretty casual with dinner, eating on the couch and watching Netflix. But sometimes when he comes home from work I surprise with him with a whole romantic evening. We eat a nice dinner at the table while listening to music. Then we play a game of Scrabble. We end the evening with a hot bath, cuddles, and more, wink wink!

  3. The bacon roses are perfect and they crack me up! I love a balance between quiet nights at home–a comfy couch and a good show make for a great night together! But I also like exploring whatever town we happen to be living in at the moment…eating out, at least, eating local food, is inexpensive here, so we try to go out for breakfast once every other week or so–the total cost is less than $4 US, so it’s a very efficient and delicious date!

    1. We loved doing that too, and with just our one toddler, it was easy (of course not as easy as before we had kids)…but now that we have a newborn again…it’s a bit more difficult!

  4. The bacon roses are genius. Scott would absolutely love that.
We don’t really have a solid baby-sitter, but I’m loving the idea of getting each other our favorite desserts and enjoying them after we put the kids to bed!
